html Why Grandco — vs Square, Moneris, Stripe & HighLevel
Grandco vs the alternatives

Stop paying
five vendors
one does it all.

Square can't process surcharges. Moneris locks you into contracts. Stripe isn't a POS. Grandco isn't a payment processor. None of them are Canadian-first. Grandco is the only platform that does all five — in one login, one bill, one Canadian support team.

Your "free" tools are
costing you a fortune.

Most Canadian business owners are stitching together five different platforms — each with its own login, support team, and monthly bill. Here's what that actually costs.

Square / Clover
POS + basic payments
~$60/mo + hardware
No surcharging. 2.65% flat on every sale. No CRM.
Moneris
Merchant account
~$40/mo + terminal
Multi-year contracts. Early exit fees. No marketing tools.
HighLevel
CRM + Marketing
~$297/mo
No payment processing. Needs separate processor.
Mailchimp / Klaviyo
Email marketing
~$80/mo
Doesn't connect to your payment data automatically.
Stripe
Online Payments
2.9% + 30¢ per txn
Developer-first. No POS. No surcharging built-in.
Monthly cost — 5 vendor stack
$477+/mo
Plus processing fees, hardware costs, integration headaches, and 5 support queues
vs.
Grandco — everything bundled
$149–$549/mo
⚡ Surcharging often offsets the entire cost → net $0

The honest case
against each alternative.

We respect our competitors. They're good at what they do. But none of them do everything a Canadian merchant needs in 2025.

Square
"The easy POS" — and they're right. Until you want more.
Our Verdict
Square is excellent for simple retail. Hardware is polished, onboarding is fast, and the brand is trusted. But Square Canada does not support credit card surcharging, which means you absorb 2.65% on every card transaction. On $100K/month of volume, that's $2,650 in fees you're eating every month. There's no CRM, no marketing automation, and no path to making the platform pay for itself. It's a great starting point — not a long-term strategy.
What Square does well
Beautiful hardware, fast setup
No long-term contracts
Solid invoicing and online store
Where Square falls short
No credit card surcharging in Canada
No built-in CRM or SMS marketing
2.65% flat rate with no interchange-plus option
US-based data storage
Why merchants switch to Grandco
Surcharging alone recovers $1,500–$3,000/month for merchants processing $80K+. That more than pays for Grandco's entire plan cost — making the switch revenue-positive from month one.

Moneris
"Canada's biggest processor" — but biggest isn't best.
Our Verdict
Moneris is a trusted institution with decades of history, Canadian data centres, and bilingual support. If you want straight-up payment processing and nothing else, Moneris is a reasonable choice. The problems: multi-year contracts with significant early-exit penalties, a product suite that hasn't modernised to include marketing tools, limited surcharging support, and terminal rental fees that add up. You're paying Moneris rates plus a separate CRM, plus a separate marketing tool. Grandco bundles all three with surcharging that can zero out the cost entirely.
What Moneris does well
Canadian-owned and operated
Canadian data centres (PIPEDA-strong)
Full bilingual EN/FR support
Where Moneris falls short
Multi-year contracts and early-exit fees
No CRM, no marketing automation
Limited surcharging — not fully enabled
Terminal rental adds $30–$60/mo per device
Why merchants switch to Grandco
Grandco's month-to-month terms mean no cancellation risk. Add full surcharging and the Grandco marketing suite and you have everything Moneris offers — plus the tools to actually grow your revenue.

Stripe
"Built for developers" — meaning not built for you.
Our Verdict
Stripe is the best payment API on the planet. If you're an engineering team building a SaaS product, Stripe is the right answer. But if you own a restaurant, salon, clinic, or retail store in Canada, Stripe is overkill in the wrong direction. There's no POS hardware, no built-in surcharging for Canadian merchants, no CRM, and no marketing tools. You'd need to hire a developer to configure even basic features. Stripe processes your payments — nothing more.
What Stripe does well
World-class payment API
Excellent developer documentation
No monthly fee (pay-per-transaction)
Where Stripe falls short
No POS hardware or in-person solution
No surcharging for Canadian SMBs
No CRM, no marketing tools
US data storage — PIPEDA concerns
Requires developer to implement
Why merchants switch to Grandco
Grandco gives you everything Stripe does for payments (via Elavon/Converge), plus POS hardware, surcharging, CRM, and marketing — with zero developer required and Canadian support you can call.

HighLevel
"The all-in-one marketing platform" — minus the payments.
Our Verdict
Grandco is genuinely excellent marketing software — CRM, SMS, email sequences, funnel builder, reputation management, appointment scheduling. If you only need marketing tools and already have payments sorted, HL at $297/month makes sense. But for a Canadian merchant, you'd still need to connect a separate processor (Stripe, Square, or Moneris), handle their fees separately, and manage two platforms. Grandco's Growth plan ($299/mo) includes Grandco's full automation suite — workflow automation, SMS, funnels, social planner — plus Elavon payment processing, a POS station, and Canadian surcharging. With surcharging enabled, your net cost is often $0.
What HighLevel does well
Industry-leading CRM and marketing suite
White-label and reseller-friendly
Powerful automation workflows
Where HighLevel falls short (for merchants)
No payment processing — needs separate processor
No POS hardware
No surcharging
US-based data storage
$297/mo before you add a processor
Why merchants switch to Grandco
Grandco's Growth plan includes Grandco's full automation suite (white-labelled) — workflow automation, SMS, funnels, social planner, and more — plus Elavon processing and surcharging. You get everything you love about HL, the payment infrastructure to run your business, and a net cost of $0 with surcharging enabled.

Clover
"Beautiful hardware, bundled with a processor you didn't pick."
Our Verdict
Clover hardware is genuinely attractive and the POS software is well-designed. But Clover in Canada is almost always sold through a bank or ISO that bundles it with their own processing rates — often not interchange-plus, and rarely with surcharging enabled. You're locked into their processor at their rates with their contract. Clover also has an app marketplace that charges you more for features that are free in competing platforms. Marketing tools are basic and disconnected from your processing data.
What Clover does well
Premium hardware design
Good app ecosystem for basic POS needs
Multiple hardware form factors
Where Clover falls short
Locked to bundled processor's rates
No surcharging in most Canadian deployments
App fees add up fast — basic CRM is an upsell
No marketing automation or SMS
Contracts through reselling bank
Why merchants switch to Grandco
Grandco gives you transparent interchange-plus pricing, surcharging that can cover your entire plan, and a CRM/marketing suite built-in — with no locked-in processor and no app upsells.

* 10–15 BPS processing residuals are based on the Grandco Surcharge Program and vary by reseller tier (Silver 10 BPS / Gold 12 BPS / Platinum 15 BPS). Residuals are paid on the 25th of each month on settled volume. Exact rates and eligibility are outlined in the Grandco Reseller Agreement. Please refer to your Reseller Agreement for full terms.

6 reasons Grandco
wins the long game.

01
Surcharging makes
it free
The October 2022 settlement made credit card surcharging legal across Canada (except Quebec). Grandco auto-configures your surcharge at up to 2.4% — the card user pays, not you. Most merchants processing $60K+/month offset their entire plan cost.

🇨🇦
Canadian first,
not an afterthought
Grandco is built in Canada, for Canada. PIPEDA compliance. Canadian data residency. EN/FR support. Elavon/Converge processing. We understand Canadian surcharge disclosure requirements, Quebec regulations, and provincial tax rules — because we live here.

🔁
One vendor,
zero integration tax
Every hour your team spends wrestling with Zapier zaps between Square, Mailchimp, and a separate CRM is money lost. Grandco's payment data flows directly into your CRM. A customer buys → they're automatically in a post-purchase follow-up sequence. Zero configuration required.
→ See platform overview
04
📅
No contracts,
no exit fees
Moneris, Clover's reselling banks, and many ISOs lock you into 3-year contracts with early-exit penalties of $300–$2,000. Grandco is month-to-month. Cancel any time, no fees, no questions. We keep you because the product earns it — not because a contract forces it.

opportunity

📞
Support that
picks up the phone
Stripe's support is a help article. Square's is a chatbot. Moneris's is a 45-minute hold. Grandco is a Canadian company with a real support team — by phone, email, and chat. If your terminal goes down on a Friday night, someone answers. That's not a small thing.

The honest answers
to your objections.

"I'm already with Square and my customers are used to it." SWITCHING COST
Your customers don't care which payment platform you use — they care how long the checkout takes. Grandco terminals process as fast as Square. The switch takes 3 to 5 business days for approval, and your new terminal ships pre-configured. If you're doing $60K/month, switching recovers $1,500+/month in surcharge offset immediately. That's a meaningful raise, not a disruption.
"Moneris has been around 25 years. Can I really trust a newer platform?" TRUST
Payment processing is handled by Elavon (a division of US Bancorp) — one of the largest and most established payment networks in North America, processing over $400B annually. Grandco is the business management layer on top. You get new-platform agility with institutional-grade payment infrastructure underneath. Your transactions are no less secure than Moneris.
"Will surcharging hurt my customer relationships?" SURCHARGING
Across Grandco merchants, the overwhelming majority of customers simply pay and move on. Debit cards (Interac, Visa Debit, Mastercard Debit) are exempt from surcharges — and in Canada, most consumers use debit far more than in the US. For credit card users, the fee is disclosed at point of sale as required by the card networks. Most business owners find 3–5% of transactions generate any friction at all. That friction saves you thousands per month.
"I'm in Quebec. Isn't surcharging illegal there?" QUEBEC
Correct — Quebec's Consumer Protection Act currently prohibits surcharging on consumer credit card transactions at physical POS. Grandco automatically disables credit card surcharges for Quebec-registered merchants. However, you still benefit from the full Grandco platform — Grandco CRM, marketing tools, POS hardware, and competitive interchange-plus processing rates. The bundled pricing remains competitive even without surcharging.
"I already pay for HighLevel. Why would I switch to Grandco?" HIGHLEVEL USERS
If you're paying $297/month for Grandco plus a separate processor (Stripe, Square, or Moneris), you're paying $400–$600+/month for two disconnected tools. Grandco's Growth plan is $299/month and includes Grandco's full automation suite — workflow automation, SMS campaigns, funnel builder, social planner, and up to 5,000 contacts — plus Elavon payment processing and a POS station. With surcharging enabled, the net cost is often $0. Your data, workflows, and contacts migrate seamlessly.
"What happens to my data if I cancel?" DATA PORTABILITY
You own your data. Period. On cancellation, Grandco provides a full data export (contacts, transaction history, campaign history) within 30 days as outlined in our Terms of Service. Contact data is exportable as CSV. Transaction records are available for the period required by CRA record-keeping rules. We don't hold your data hostage — we earn your continued business by being better, not by making it painful to leave.
